Why 90% of New Year’s Resolutions and Plans FAIL…
Ok, maybe that headline is a little harsh (and not all that motivating) but I think we can both say that it is a lot closer to truth than not. In fact, I’m writing this blog post specifically one week after most people tip their glasses and express their changes to be magically done within the next 12 months because most people have already forgotten their commitments by now!
Sad but true.
A few years ago, I learned about a productivity method that really worked for me. I would suggest that anybody that who wants to accomplish anything big this year…give it a try. It’s called Simpleology (The Simple Science of Getting What You Want). It was created by a guy name Mark Joyner.
I did this simple program a few years back and I’m going back to it again this year because I accomplished a ton during the year that I used it. The title really says it all…it’s simple. Each day you spend about 15 minutes on the actual “program”. There is a quick 5-minute video lesson, 4-5 pages to read, and a short quiz to take. Then you prepare your day.
I can tell you first hand that the program really works. It’s the only productivity program that has ever really worked for me. Maybe I just need to always keep things short and simple. Anyway, it’s a free program and it’s online…you should check it out. (BTW there are some pay versions…but the free one worked out great for me).
The Simpleology link is at the bottom of this blog post.
So, speaking of this whole subject…I was reading another blog the other day written by Seth Godin. He was talking about productivity. It’s a little bit cynical but it is probably more true than false. I have reprinted it here…note that GTD is Getting Things Done.
The reason productivity improvements don’t work (as well as they could)
GTD, 18 minute plans, organized folders… none of them work as well as you’d like.
The reason is simple: you don’t want to get more done.
You’re afraid. Getting more done would mean exposing yourself to considerable risk, to crossing bridges, to putting things into the world. Which means failure.
The leap the lizard brain takes when confronting the opportunity is a simple formula: GTD=Failure.
Until you quiet the resistance and commit to actually shipping things that matter, all the productivity tips in the world aren’t going to make a real difference. And, it turns out, once you do make the commitment, the productivity tips aren’t that needed.
You don’t need a new plan for next year. You need a commitment.
See, I told you it was pretty cynical…but there’s a lot of truth in it.
Anyway, do yourself a favor…forget about the fact that week one of 2012 is over. This week is the first week of the rest of your life. Check out Simpleology and maybe you can join me in making this the very best year of your life too.
